Manuscript Submission: Experimental Dermatology is only accepting manuscripts electronically via an online submission site, Manuscript Central. The use of an online submission and peer review site will speed the time to decisions, enable immediate distribution and allow authors to track their own manuscripts. To access this system for submission and review, go directly to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/exd. Will authors please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

Page charges: Articles should not exceed 7 printed pages (approx. 5000 words). Additional pages must be paid for at a rate of GBP 135 per page (not applicable for Review Articles).

Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. There is no submission fee.

Exclusive Licence to Publish: The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive licence to publish to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible.
In granting the licence, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Blackwell Munksgaard is notified in writing and in advance.
When the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the corresponding author will have to sign an exclusive licence form on behalf of all co-authors. This form has to be returned to the production editor. You can download the Exclusive Licence Form at www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/caf_exd.pdf.

Manuscript Arrangement

Research Articles:
Research Articles may not exceed 5,000 words (not including references). Research Articles should contain a maximum of 6 display items (Figures and Tables). Please list the word count and number of display items on the cover page of the manuscript. Manuscripts exceeding these limits will be returned to Authors without review. Each manuscript component should begin on a new page in the following sequence: title page; abstract; key words (3 to 5); introduction; methods; results; discussion; acknowledgments; references; tables (each table, complete with title and footnotes, on a separate page); legends for illustrations. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page. Type the page number in the upper righthand corner of each page. Number the tables consecutively with arabic numerals. For any further details, consult the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to bio-medical journals , Ref. (2) below.

Methods in Experimental Dermatology:
Methods manuscripts may not exceed approx 2,500 words (not including references) and should contain a maximum of 2 display items. In addition, Experimental Dermatology regularly publishes Methodological Reviews that provide state-of-the-art, authoritative coverage of important laboratory techniques across all areas of investigative dermatology and molecular biomedicine. These critical reviews also cover typical problems and limitations encountered with the discussed method, suggest problem solving approaches, and offer pragmatic advice from experienced laboratory practitioners not only for newcomers but also readers interested in the field. The submission of Methods Reviews, is invited by the Section Editor. If you are interested in writing a Methods Review, please, contact the section editor.
Section editor: Stefan Beissert, Münster, Germany
E-Mail: beisser@uni-muenster.de.

Viewpoint:
Viewpoint articles may not exceed 2000 words and 50 references.

Patterns of Expression:
Patterns of Expression is a category of paper reporting the comprehensive pattern of expression of a new or important gene during embryonic development and/or in the adult organism, highlighting interesting or unexpected findings. Patterns of expression papers should contain data using multiple complimentary approaches, including but not limited to, in situ hybridization, immuniohistochemistry, immunoflourescence, real-time PCR, western and northern blot. Papers should not exceed 2,500 words and do not require an invitation by the Editor. Documentation should be stringently restricted to what is really essential in order to convincingly document the reported expression pattern. Non-essential, supplementary material, also in color, may be displayed free-of-charge on the journal website.

Illustrations:
All figures should clarify the text and their number should be kept to a minimum. Details must be large enough to retain their clarity after reduction. Illustrations should preferably fill single column width (81 mm) after reduction, although in exceptional cases 2/3 width (120 mm) or full page width (168 mm) will be accepted. Line drawings should be professionally drafted and photographed; halftones should exhibit high contrast. A linear size scale should be incorporated into electron microscopic pictures. Colour illustrations will be accepted free of charge.

Abbreviations and Symbols:
Use only standard abbreviations. All units will be metric. Use no roman numerals in the text. In decimals, a decimal point, and not a comma, will be used. Consult the CBE style manual: a guide for authors, editors and publishers in the biological sciences, 4th edition, Arlington, Virginia, 1978. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement. Units of measurement should be expressed in accordance with the SI and CIE recommendations (see Ref. 3, below).

References:
Number references consecutively in the order in which they appear first in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). All references cited, and only these, must be listed at the end of the paper. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. The names of unlisted journals should be spelled out. We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:
http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp
Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp

Proofs:
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. A copy should be corrected and returned by airmail to the publisher, along with the working copy of the manuscript. Only minor corrections other than typographical errors will be allowed without extra cost.

Offprints:
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the following if offprints do not arrive: C.O.S. Printers Pte Ltd., 9 Kian Teck Crescent, Singapore 628875; Fax: +65 62659074; Email: offprints@cosprinters.com. However, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the first author at his or her first email address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore please ensure that the name, address and email of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.

Author material archive policy:
Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted 3 months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.

Online Open:
OnlineOpen is a pay-to-publish service from Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscripts to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via the Blackwell Synergy website. Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of £1300 (equivalent to $2600) to be met by or on behalf of the author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be marked as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free via the Blackwell Synergy service. All OnlineOpen articles will also be flagged up as such with any third parties Blackwell supply content to. The copyright form for this service can be found at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/EXD_OOF.pdf.
